As of this morning, the U-Haul is scheduled, most of the boxes are packed, and the fridge is nearly empty. All these signs point to one thing: the Cottons are headed your way! We should land by the end of the week, just in time to gather again this Suday. Speaking of Sundays..
This past Sunday we concluded our journey through the book of Esther by looking at and discovering a surprising truth: God does His greatest kingdom work through ordinary people who faithfully serve Him where He has placed them.
Our world tells us that significance comes from doing something extraordinary—building a platform, making a name for ourselves, or changing the world. But Esther ends with a different message. Mordecai and Esther didn’t spend their lives chasing greatness. They simply remained faithful to the opportunities God placed before them, and God used their ordinary obedience to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
Most importantly, we saw how Esther points us to Jesus. Because of His finished work, we no longer have to earn our significance through achievement or recognition. Our identity is already secure in Christ, freeing us to faithfully love, serve, and obey Him in the ordinary moments of everyday life. We celebrate the God whose hidden hand is never still and who delights to accomplish extraordinary things through the ordinary faithfulness of His people.
Look for one ordinary opportunity this week to love, encourage, or serve someone where God has already placed you. You may discover that God does extraordinary things through simple acts of faithfulness.
This idea of seeing our "ordinary" acts of faithfulness as means that God uses to accomplish His "greatness" is near to my heart.
